Non-modified and carboxylic acid-modified Fe 3O 4 NPs provide greater stability for o/w emulsions prepared with non-polar or weakly polar oils. Fe 3O 4 NPs can be surface modified through coordination via carboxylic acids and silane coupling agents. The efficiency of Fe 3O 4 NPs in stabilizing Pickering emulsions depend on the polarity of the oil used in the preparation of the Pickering emulsion. Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3O 4 NPs) are known to play an important role in stabilizing Pickering emulsions due to their variable functionality and hydrophobicity. In the case of oil-in-water (o/w) or water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions, such types of Pickering emulsions have utility in various applications such as the preparation of porous materials due to their ability to self-assemble at the o/w interface. Finally, it was concluded that preprocessing by R-SH could form a stable and uniform emulsion speedily, which is essential for ultrasound emulsion preparation. The experimental results showed that the emulsion prepared only by ultrasound needed substantial power to form a Pickering emulsion since the oil phase was difficult to disperse in the water phase. Micro-scale nano-silica-aggregates generated large droplets, while the fine-emulsion fraction was significantly increased after ultrasonic treatment. The obtained results demonstrated that the main distribution peak of the emulsion prepared by R-SH occurred where the chord length was greater than 40 μm. The kerosene/water nano-silica Pickering emulsion was utilized for all assessments. The influences of emulsification time and intensity on emulsion droplets' distribution were analyzed as indicative factors. To fill these gaps, the present investigation comprehensively examined the application of various Pickering emulsion preparation processes such as rotor-stator homogenization emulsification (R-SH), ultrasonic emulsification, and their combined processes by using nano-silica particles. Although Pickering emulations have found several applications, surprisingly few investigations have attempted to explore the effectiveness of various mechanical processes for its production.
